i am forced to say that i have lost hope in chicago's fine reputation for hip hop and r&b (i don't actually mean this, but for dramatic effect i am inclined to exaggerate).

as i was browsing through rawkus.com, i came across a very disturbing 'cover.'
take note to chicago's up-and-coming songbird, syleena johnson. sure, she's got that hotness thing going for her, but all shallow-things aside, that does not give her the right to do some stupid shit. for example: she covered lauryn hill's ex-factor. really, what the hell was she thinking? you can't just cover a song like that, throw some shitty rapper in the middle, and expect well-received feedback. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. what an idiot.

after watching this 'freestyle' interview with lil wayne, i have come to a heavy realization. everyone is trying to dysect the life of weezy, when it's all so clear: he is just fucking with everyone. word on the street (from sohh.com) is that they are going to do a biographical flim on b.i.g. director antoine fuqua (training day) and diddy will be working on the project. if this flick becomes a post-sentimental crap-fest that sucks out all of the flyness of b.i.g., it would only be natural to put the full blame on puff daddy. it only takes four words to realize the potential disappointment: raisin in the sun. it is said that gravy from bk (to the right) will hold the character of biggie. this is good news considering the uncanny resemblence and the pimp-like personality. he also hails from brookyn, and personally i feel that he is a bona fide badass. i mean, he did walk off a bullet to the butt cheek two years ago. if that's not deserving of a star role in a film, than i honestly don't know what is.

a bob marley bio-flick is said to be in the works with lauryn hill playing his wife, rita marley. though i applaud this subtle movie comeback (damn, she was good in sister act 2), i really think it's time that ms. hill just give us another album already.

this album has left me in a confused/intrigued/disgusted state of mind all at once. is this some sick, sick joke? why is fearless records fucking with the general public? i'll admit that the previous compilations that this record company chose to release were...entertaining, but let's get one thing completely straight: YOU DO NOT FUCK AROUND WITH HIP HOP.

you know how i know that this is absolute mochary? well, take a look at the choice of songs and artists that these bands chose to cover:

1) men in black. excuse me, men in black? it kind of makes sense; a whiney band full of white boy losers chose to cover a will smith (basically the whitest black rapper ever) song. BUT if they had any respect, however, they would have at least done "parents just don't understand." ya know, when dj jazzy jeff had big willie's back.

2) umbrella. first off, since when did rihanna's song "umbrella" become known as a crunk hit? sure it had its glory... about eight months ago (and in the pop industry, mind you). you can't cover a song that was released in the previous year. not only is that not fresh, it's downright funk. and not funk in that chaka khan sense...i'm talking stanky-body-odor-funk.

3) "i wanna love you" by akon? this song is not only suffering from the same ailment as umbrella (lack of crunkness), but it is also the radio edit version of the song. why would you choose the radio edit version? DOWN WITH CENSORSHIP. doesn't fearless records know anything about rap muzak?

4) i know for a fact that ODB and BIG would NOT be pleased with this situation if they were here with us on earth. this is not only disrespect to the deceased, it is an invasion of what is good in hip hop.

i could go on and on about this, but i would just get too exhausted.

while there are a couple of things to ignore in the upcoming months, here are some tight releases to look forward to:

so apparently, mr. young-carter-weezy admitted that he has a problem with syrup... whoa, back up... last month he was convicted of possession of ecstasy, cocaine, and marijuana, but his biggest drug problem is with...syrup? just to make one thing straight, robo-trippin is not and never will be cool... even in middle school it was lame, so i don't know how admitting this adverse addiction will effect him. you can read on about this 'tragic' tale of fixation here.

so i'm always on the hunt for some new and solid hip hop. while on my hunt i bumped into anthony j. shears. it's nothing ground-breaking, but i feel that it is well-worth of knowing. you can listen to all his songs and even buy his album, "the growth: my endtroduction," right here. i would highly recommend to check out the track "tears in your eyes" (both the orginal and the parachute version). it's the only song that can make coldplay's the scientist and the pretenders' i'll stand by you close to hip hop.

while we are celebrating, we might as well hype up for the release of the incarcerated. remember shyne? probably not because he's been in prison since 2001...the only songs that i remember were his guest appearances in total's "sittin' home" and 112 "anywhere." apprarently he has two full-length albums (one he made in prison) that i now feel obliged to check out due to his public prison release.

shyne was the guy that took the fall for puff daddy and j-lo during that whole club shoot-out... yeah, one more reason why sean combs is just a little bitch. after seven years of sittin in a cell, shyne will be released this year because of his "good behavior". way to go, shyne. way to go.

it is rumored that NAS and JAY-Z will be releasing a duet album come next year titled "kings of hip hop". this is excellent news. but it would be even better if i knew it were true. i guess we'll see.

so what can make the american gangster album better? um, perhaps dropping a little marvin gaye in the mix and calling it brooklyn soul. so i realize that this album has been out for a couple months, but i don't feel that it is getting the love that it deserves. with that said, i am sharing the whole album for those who want their mind to be blown away. a little something for everyone to think about to get through this harsh and unmerciful winter:

the film "street kings" is coming to theaters on april 11. if you aren't familiar with the plot line it is basically about a distraught veteran cop who has been tangled in a web of implications, in turn, loses trust in his past career and those around him. good cop becomes infected with crazy paranoia? haven't heard that one before... good thing the film stars mr. lonnie rashid lynn jr. (common), jayceon "the game" taylor (who will hopefully be out of jail by the time the movie hits), cedric the entertainer, forest whitaker, and the lead role of keanu reeves... wait a hot second? KEANU REEVES? i was just about to commend the efforts of this film for its hip hop quality, but unfortunately keanu has to ruin all of the film's glory. who knows, maybe this matrix marvel will surprise us (i still won't keep the standard bar high). you can be the judge:

well, at least the film has songs from lupe and wu-tang's rza featured in the trailer. while the movie may not be as hip hop as i hoped for (damn you keanu reeves), the soundtrack definitely has some heavy potential.

video games have always held a nerdy reputation (although i have always thought that they were fly as hell). sure, games like "rockstar" and "guitar hero" have put an edgy spin on game systems, but now we can finally feel the groove that every gamer wants to attain; it is now safe to say that video games are hip hop.

according to kotaku.com, NBA Ballers: Chosen One will have an original score produced by just blaze (just in case you haven't been educated, you can hear beats from him on albums such as: jay z - the black album, blueprint I & II, kingdom come, etc.; kanye west - late registration; ghostface - fishscale; talib kweli - the beautiful struggle, eardrum; big pun - yeeeah baby; and basically on any hip hop/r&b record that is hot-- yeah, he's a pretty big deal).

so while my brokeass can't afford HBO, i have heard all this buzz about "the wire." after watching an episode of the current (and final) season, i have only concluded that: DAMN, BALTIMORE. YOU ARE BADASS.

for a couple months i have been floored by the fact that babyface decided to cover "fire and rain" (by mr."you're-so-vain" himself, james taylor). who would have ever dreamed (or nightmared) this duo of abnormality? with that said, it never crossed my mind that kenny "babyface" edmonds had created an entire album of covers originally played by a bunch of burned-out white dudes. One that particularly popped out was bob dylan's "knockin on heaven's door," and not because the song is good, but mostly because these two artists are absolutely insoluble.

is it possible for bob dylan and babyface to have tea together? or are the two of them more likely able to sit at a piano and write love songs for mariah carey? nothing makes sense anymore.

two weeks prior to the drop of mr. west's highly anticipated "graduation," a little album called "below the heavens" (brought to a handful of audiences by emcee 'blu' and beatmaster 'exile') made its debut.

though these albums do not have much in comparison, there is a similarity with one song title: "good life" presented by kanye west, and "show me the good life" presented by blu & exile.

so while i have no authority to identify the better song, i will say that the tight collaborations with blu & exile are much more intelligent than say.... kanye west and t-pain?

don't get me wrong, i am not knocking down my boy t-pain. let's face it, who isn't in love with a stripper? all i'm trying to do is suggest a more humble alternative.

as for the poetry and hip-hop enthusiast... pick up the dead emcee scrolls: the lost teachings of hip-hop by saul williams. it might not change your life, but it beats reading bizarre and irrational poems from an isolated white girl (i think it's safe to admit that no one really enjoys anything written by emily dickinson)
